In North Carolina, most of our state’s chapters provide opportunities for youths to participate in several youth scholarship competitions designed to deepen their understanding and appreciation of our nation’s founding through expression in art, writing and oration.
These contests are first sponsored at the local chapter level, then the local winners advance to the state level, and finally the state winners advance to the national contest held annually at the SAR national congress.
These contests are divided into groups based on youth ages. The Americanism Poster contest is available for student in Elementary School (grades 3rd – 5th), while the Brochure contest is available for students in Middle School (grades 6th – 8th). Please see the links for more information.
Other contests are available to those students at the High School level. The contests are for Oration, Essay, and Video. Students can compete in all three but may not win all three at the state or national level.
The SAR has additional contests for those individuals who are in Eagle Scouts or who participate in JROTC.
Each year our chapter solicits entries from all public and private history teachers who teach programs about the Revolutionary War. The teacher submits an essay on a specific topic and then a winning essay is selected and the teacher wins a $150 award.
