“The Revolutionary Battlefield Surgeon”
Presented by
Dr. Jim Theofrastous, MD.

Summary: Jim hopes to give you a perspective on the challenges the Revolutionary War surgeon faced on the battlefield on land & at sea, & how some of those challenges have been improved.
Jim Theofrastous has been a recovering Yankee in North Carolina for the last 32 years. He is getting better. He hopes to make a full recovery. He will reveal how someone with his unlikely surname contributed to the Plymouth colony & the colonial army.
He & his brother, Ted, grew up as feral children roaming the wild forests & mountains of coastal Maine. He was given the game “Operation” on his 7th birthday & was hooked. He knew he wanted to become a surgeon. He is proud to say that he’s never had a patient’s nose turn red with a loud buzzing sound. He made the mistake of doing his residency training in San Diego & quickly lost interest in freezing weather. He fell in love with Western North Carolina while travelling in the Smokies on his way to complete his surgical training in Durham. He was struck by Western North Carolina’s beauty, & a seed was planted.
He was incredibly lucky when he completed his fellowship in Female Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery & Urogynecology to be able to bring his subspecialty to this region.
He joined the faculty of the Chapel Hill residency training program in Asheville & continued his clinical research & teaching residents & medical students. He published several research papers & textbook chapters. He became a Clinical Professor at UNC School of Medicine & was a reviewer for medical journals. He & his wife, Michelle LeBlanc, MD, have 3 children who are pursuing culinary & artistic careers.
He retired in 2023 & moved full-time to Lake James. He has continued an active life of mountain biking, kayaking, rowing, & hydro biking. His wife has now talked him into trying Pickleball!
Jim is retired from competitive 3-gun shooting & enjoys shooting at a range in Nebo. If anyone is interested in shooting there & perhaps becoming a member, let Jim know. He is an NRA-certified Range Safety Officer & Pistol Firearms Instructor. After joining this society, He built & finished a Kentucky flint-lock musket, which he has shot with his father-in-law.
